India’s captain Rohit Sharma has announced that he is retiring from Test cricket with immediate effect. The announcement came shortly after reports began circulating online that he had been removed as Test captain.

Rohit shared the news on his Instagram story and also mentioned that he will continue playing One-Day Internationals (ODIs) for India.

At 38, Rohit was one of India’s best Test batters in the later years of his career. He scored 4,301 runs in 67 Tests, including 12 centuries and 18 fifties, with an average of 40.57.

He led India to the World Test Championship final against Australia. However, his recent performance as captain hasn’t been great. India lost five out of their last six Tests under his leadership, at home against New Zealand and away in Australia.

A NEW CAPTAIN FOR TEAM INDIA IN ENGLAND!

According to a report by The Indian Express, the BCCI’s senior selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, has decided to remove Rohit from the Test captaincy ahead of the upcoming tour of England.

He is still expected to be in the squad as a batter, and likely remain ODI captain.

However, the selectors were not satisfied with his current form in red-ball cricket.

In fact, Rohit had such a poor run with the bat that he even dropped himself from the playing XI for the final Test in Sydney.

The selectors reportedly discussed this in multiple meetings, including a recent one in Mumbai, where they laid out future plans for the Test team.

Although Rohit had earlier said on a podcast with Michael Clarke that he wanted to lead India in England, the selectors have moved in a different direction.

The committee now wants to prepare a younger leader for the future, especially considering Rohit’s struggles with the bat. In the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, he averaged just 6.20 in five innings.

That slump followed another weak performance at home against New Zealand, where his average was only 15.16 across three Tests.
