Maxwell, one of Australia’s senior players, had a tough time this season. He only managed to score 48 runs across seven matches, including six single-digit scores.

The injury happened ahead of Punjab’s match against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens on April 26. That game was washed out by rain, but before that, Maxwell was dismissed for just 7 runs.

In the following match against Chennai Super Kings, which Punjab Kings won by four wickets, Suryansh Shedge came in as his temporary replacement.

IPL’s statement

According to an official statement by the IPL: “Punjab Kings have picked all-rounder Mitch Owen as a replacement for Glenn Maxwell, who has been ruled out of the remainder of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 due to a broken finger.”

Mitch Owen, 23, is a right-hand batter and medium pacer. He will join the PBKS squad for ₹3 crore.

The IPL added: “Mitch Owen, from Tasmania, Australia, has played 34 T20s and scored 646 runs, including two centuries and a highest score of 108. The Australian all-rounder also has 10 T20 wickets to his name.”

Owen grabbed headlines in January when he smashed a blazing century in just 39 balls, the joint-fastest in Big Bash League (BBL) history.

Representing the Hobart Hurricanes in the final against David Warner’s Sydney Thunder at Bellerive Oval, he hammered 108 runs off 42 deliveries, hitting six boundaries and clearing the ropes 11 times.
