Priyansh Arya was the name on everyone’s mouth after Tuesday night in the IPL. The 24-year old opener scored his maiden-IPL hundred, for Punjab Kings at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, Chandigarh.

At the receiving end of all the carnage from Arya’s bat was Chennai Super Kings, led by Ruturaj Gaikwad. Arya hit 103 off just 42 balls while wickets fell at regular intervals at the other end. He hit 7 fours and 9 sixes in his innings.

Afghanistan spinner Noor Ahmad eventually scalped his wicket, but only after he had done all the damage and put Punjab Kings on course for a big total. Arya walked back to the pavilion with a thunderous applause from his team-mates and the crowd in attendance.

It was the second-fastest century (by balls faced) by an Indian in the IPL. Arya’s hundred came off 39 balls. Only Yusuf Pathan (37-ball ton in 2010) is ahead of him in the list among Indians.

Priyansh Arya was in see-ball hit ball mode.

The youngster first came into the limelight when he smashed six sixes in an over while playing a knock of 120 off 50 balls in a Delhi Premier League game.

He never looked back from there and that meant there was a bidding war over him at last year’s IPL auction, before Punjab Kings (PBKS) eventually bought him for INR 3.8 crore (from a base price of INR 30 lakh).

The left-handed batsman had scored 600 runs in the DPL T20 2024. Not just that, he maintained a strike-rate of over 166 in Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament in the 2023-24 season for his team.

Arya’s both parents – father Pawan Arya and mother Radha Bala Arya – are school teachers by profession.

Arya’s clean-hitting and fearless approach has also earned him praise from Ravichandran Ashwin in the past, who was himself hit for plenty by the centurion.

This hundred puts Arya right in the race for the Emerging Player of the Season award at IPL 2025.
