Watch: Dewald Brevis’ Shocking Dismissal Explained – Viral

Former international umpire Anil Chaudhary has said that while it’s rare for the DRS timer to not appear on the stadium’s big screen, the bigger mistake came from Dewald Brevis and Ravindra Jadeja, who kept running even after the umpire had already given Brevis out.

In a match that stayed tense until the final ball, a missed chance to review Brevis’s LBW decision turned out to be a crucial moment that helped Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) edge ahead.

Brevis came in to bat in the 17th over of Chennai Super Kings’ run chase, just after Ayush Mhatre was dismissed following a superb 94-run innings.

On his very first ball, bowled by fellow South African Lungi Ngidi, Brevis was hit on the pads and given out LBW by the umpire. Both he and Jadeja continued running, and there was even a direct hit at the non-striker’s end.

In the confusion, Brevis turned to Jadeja to ask about taking a review. But with the DRS countdown not shown on the screen, Brevis didn’t realize time was running out. By the time he signaled for the review, the umpire told him the 15-second window had passed.

Anil Chaudhary explains the incident

“When five seconds are left on the timer, the on-field umpire informs the players, that’s part of the protocol. But it’s the first time I’ve seen batters keep running after a decision has been made. Once the batter is given out, the ball is dead, and there’s no point running,” Chaudhary explained on Star Sports.

Jadeja appeared visibly upset and had a few words with the officials, but the original decision couldn’t be changed. Brevis, out for a golden duck, had to walk back without the chance to review.

A few minutes later, the replay showed that the ball was actually missing the stumps. If the review had been taken in time, Brevis would’ve stayed in, and the match might have had a different ending.
