Kamindu Mendis, the batting all-rounder for Sri Lanka and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), pulled off a breathtaking catch during their IPL 2025 clash against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday.

During CSK’s innings, batter Dewald Brevis unleashed a powerful straight drive towards long-off, where Mendis was positioned. The delivery, a half-volley from SRH pacer Harshal Patel, was struck with immense force.

Despite the ball swerving away, the ambidextrous Mendis leaped to his left and completed a spectacular catch.

“Catch of IPL,” exclaimed former India captain Ravi Shastri during commentary.

His co-commentator, former West Indies cricketer Ian Bishop, added: “Which is his weak side we never know.”

A SCREAMER AT LONG-OFF

Even SRH CEO and co-owner Kavya Maran was seen visibly thrilled by the effort.

In the post-match press conference, SRH head coach Daniel Vettori praised Mendis’s natural instincts:

“I think it’s just instinct. It’s an innate ability to be able to move, to see the ball and time you’re diving,”
he said.

Vettori further elaborated: “So it’s probably one of those catches that even a brilliant fielder only has one or two of in their career. A special moment from the catch, but more importantly for us, the moment in the game where Brevis was starting to take control, putting a lot of pressure back on us. And if he’d stayed in, probably the score would have gotten away on us, and it would have been a difficult chase.”

Following Brevis’s dismissal, CSK struggled to accelerate, managing just 40 runs from their final 43 balls, eventually getting bowled out for 154 in 19.5 overs.

SRH chased down the target comfortably, winning the match with eight balls to spare.

Next up, SRH will face Shubman Gill’s Gujarat Titans (GT) on Friday, May 2, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
