India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir strongly responded to Sunil Gavaskar’s recent comments about prize money, following India’s Champions Trophy win. After India beat New Zealand in the final, the BCCI awarded ₹58 crore to the team.

In a column, Gavaskar questioned whether Gambhir would, like former coach Rahul Dravid, refuse extra money and accept the same amount as the rest of the support staff.

Dravid had previously chosen not to take the additional ₹2.5 crore after India’s T20 World Cup 2024 win, opting instead for equal distribution among all staff.

Gambhir, speaking at the ABP News ‘India at 2047’ Summit, reflected on his 8-month tenure. While India won the Champions Trophy, they also lost Test series to New Zealand at home and Australia away.

GAMBHIR DOESN’T HOLD BACK

Addressing criticism, he said: “When I accepted this job, I knew I’d be judged every day. Criticism and praise will come with the job. Success doesn’t always follow a straight line. My goal is to make the country proud with the players. And if results don’t come, I have no problem with being criticized.”

Without directly naming Gavaskar, Gambhir responded to the remarks on prize money and his performance: “Some people, who’ve been in the commentary box for over two decades, keep questioning everything. They act like Indian cricket is their personal property. But it belongs to every Indian, not just a few.”

He also responded to the suggestion that he should disclose what he did with his share of the prize money: “I don’t owe anyone an explanation on where I used the prize money. But people should know this, some of those criticizing me live abroad, earn from India, and take the money elsewhere. I don’t skip immigration lines at midnight. I live here. I’m Indian and will stay Indian till my last breath. I won’t become an NRI to save on taxes.”

Gambhir finished by saying those who criticize should also be open to scrutiny themselves:

“People living in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones at others.”
